Mondays for Moon Nights Continue

Student volunteers

On September 24, students from Woodson High School and Westfield High School visited our Anderson Road office. The student volunteers took a tour, stuffed county-wide candidate inserts into literature that will be dropped at homes by the state coordinated campaign, and then headed off to hand out Moon pencils at local back-to-school nights.

Fairfax County’s high school football season began last week and, with it, a buzz about a campaign advertisement featured in the football programs handed out at the games. The new campaign ad features a young Ilryong Moon, circa 1977, sitting on the bleachers as a student at T.C. Williams High School. This flashback image is contrasted with recent shots of Ilryong attending his son’s basketball game. The ad emphasizes Ilryong’s long and lasting support for school sports programs, from his days as a student, to today as a parent and School Board member.

Governor Tim Kaine attended a rally for volunteers July 28 at the Fairfax County Democratic Committee’s coordinated campaign office in McLean. The rally drew a crowd of more than 400 party activists. Kaine reminded the crowd that outcomes of political races are often determined by the actions and strength of the volunteers. Ilryong Moon was among the candidates introduced to the crowd as someone whose leadership over the years has been an inspiring example to others. Moon has been a Fairfax County School Board Member for eight years.

Governor Kaine and Ilryong Moon
Dear Friends,

My campaign kick-off on June 15 was successful and I would like to thank many of you for attending it and, of course, for your campaign contributions both this year and in the past.

As I said at the kick-off, I intend to work toward continued excellence in quality of our schools and preparation of our students for the global community of the 21st century. I believe foreign language learning will need to start at an earlier grade and the full-day kindergarten needs to be expanded throughout the county. We all need to work doubly hard to continue reducing achievement gap among diverse groups of students. My eight years of experience on the board and the unique perspective that I bring as an immigrant, former ESL student, parent of a FCPS graduate and current FCPS student, and also as a husband of a public school teacher is very much beneficial to the work of the Fairfax County School Board. My colleagues have said this practical experience makes me an “authentic voice” on the board.

However, this year’s at-large race will be tougher than four years ago, with eight candidates running for three spots now. My name will be listed as sixth on the ballot because of the alphabetical order. So that voters don’t just pick the top three they see, we have to work harder for name recognition, which means expenditures for ads, mailings, signs and telephone reminders. I need all of my friends to display a bumper sticker on their car and put a sign in their yard. I need a lot of your help, personally. I need both money and volunteers. I look forward to working together with you for a win in November.

Sincere thanks,
Ilryong Moon
Dear Friends,

As you may know, I am running for re-election for my at-large (county-wide) seat on the Fairfax County School Board. This campaign will be successful only if I have a solid base of support in each of the magisterial districts of this diverse county. Although I am grateful for the success of the past several years, including a term as School Board Chairman, my seat is being challenged, and we will have to work just as hard as ever to win this one.

With this in mind, I would be honored if you attended my announcement reception on June 15, 2007, from 7-9 p.m. This event will take place at the Northern Virginia Community College, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia 22003. I would be delighted to see you there. I need your help so that I can continue working toward strengthening our public schools in Fairfax County. Thank you.

Sincerely yours,
Ilryong Moon
