Ilryong is running for re-election because he wants Fairfax County Public Schools to be the best school system in the country. During his twelve years in office, his efforts have lead to continuous improvement in Fairfax schools. For more information, click on the links or check out our endorsement questionnaires.
Choosing the Right Superintendent
Ilryong believes we need to have an open, collaborative search process that will take into account community input as well as a vision of excellence for the next decade set by the new school board.
Maintaining Continuous Improvement
Over the past decade, academic indicators have continually improved, making FCPS one of the highest-performing school systems in the country. This trend needs to continue.
Recruiting and Maintaining the Best Teachers and Employees
The heart of this school system is its excellent employees. We need to constantly be vigilant in order to ensure that the school system offers competitive salaries and benefits in order to attract and retain the best teachers and employees.
Efficiency and the Audit Committee
Resources for education are always scarce and precious, but given budget cuts during the recession, we need to be more watchful of where money goes now than ever. Ilryong supports fully funding an independent audit function to report directly to the school board as an essential step towards increasing administrative efficiency and gaining a complete understanding of the best use of FCPS funds.
Closing the Achievement Gap
In recent years, tremendous progress has been made to close the gap in academic achievement between the highest- and lowest-performing subgroups. Currently, there is a comprehensive plan in place to continue this work. FCPS now targets students with the greatest need for attention at critical periods, working hard to keep them at grade level before they get a chance to fall behind.
Increasing Stakeholder and Community Involvement
Ilryong believes a good school board member should always listen first. FCPS is a very large school system, and even small changes in policy will affect many different kinds and numbers of stakeholders. Teachers, parents, students, community members and others should always be involved in discussions about our schools.
